As it turns out, it’s extremely difficult to talk to anyone about playing bridge during lockdown, because everyone is, in fact, playing bridge. I call Di Jagelman, a Sydney society doyenne with a lovely warm voice. Her first words are: “Hullo? I’ve got to play a card! Oh no! Oh no!”

I’m calling about bridge, I say. Shall I call you back?

“Yes! It’s my turn, oh no!” She hangs up.

Our face-to-face game also made the 6pm news, with our club at East Lindfield taking centre stage. In a piece about COVID-19 booster shots, Monday afternoon regular Judy de Flamingh found her face appearing on television screens all over Sydney!
