Bridge Law 74

Bridge Law 74

I am sure that all of you reading this will agree that our Directors do an amazing job and we are very lucky to have them.

One of the worst parts of their job is reminding players about Law 74.  Your Committee and Directors would appreciate if you would help us by understanding and abiding by this important rule of Bridge.

We have put ChatGPT to work and asked them for 2 poems, one serious and one funny, have a read or alternatively you can read the full law by clicking Law 74.

Law 74 Score

A game of Bridge, a world of its own,
Where etiquette and manners are fully shown.
For Bridge Law 74, "Proper Attitude" is key,
Courtesy and conformity for all to see.

A courteous manner must always prevail,
No remarks or actions that may offend or derail.
The game's enjoyment is what we seek,
Etiquette of word and action is what we must keep.

Detaching a card before it's time to play,
Prolonging play to gesture and sway,
Summoning the Director, done politely,
In a manner discourteous, we must not be.

Different designations, we must not use,
Approval or disapproval, we must refuse.
Expectations of tricks, we must not show,
Comments and tempers, we must not throw.

Looking intently is not allowed,
Nor a lack of interest that's avowed.
The normal tempo must be maintained,
Leaving the table needlessly is restrained.

For Bridge Law 74, "Proper Attitude" we must obey,
Respect and courtesy, we must display.
Etiquette and manners are a vital part,
Of the game of Bridge, that's close to our heart.

Law 74 Ditty

There once was a bridge player so rude
Who never played with the proper attitude
Huffing, and puffing, with fists in the air
Shouting at partners, it just wasn't fair

Hesitations or hints to give away
Telling opponents how to play
Post mortems before the round was done
And no alerts to spoil the fun

But this player just couldn't abide
By Bridge Law 74, they often defied
Their partners would wince and opponents would groan
Until they finally played all alone!

We thank you for your co-operation in advance.
