Lessons and Events
Check out all the Lessons available in August to help you improve your Bridge game, also look below for all the Major Events happening in August and September and don't forget the Winter Cup.
I'm excited to share some fantastic news – we have a brand-new sponsor, Kieser!
For those who haven't heard of them, Kieser is all about strength training with a twist – think physiotherapy meets precision engineering. Their machines are not like the usual ones you find in a gym. They're designed to isolate and target specific muscles you didn't even know you had (until you feel them the next day!).
I can personally vouch for them because I'm now their newest customer. I have to say, they are taking exceptionally good care of me. The team really knows their stuff, and I can already feel the difference. If you're even slightly curious, their ½ price initial assessment offer is well worth it – you'll walk out feeling like you've done something great for your body.
Kieser isn't just helping us get stronger; they're also supporting our club in a big way. Not only are they sponsoring a Congress in 2026, but they've also committed at least $200 each month for Face-to-Face session prizes. How good is that? So please support them if you can – it's a win-win.
Club Business
The club is looking very healthy – both in numbers and spirit! Session growth is still climbing, and that's a massive part of our success. Another big reason is Jo, who continues to volunteer her time as our Bookkeeper – an incredible saving for the club. Next time you see her, please take a moment to say a big thank you.
Festival of Bridge – Worth Mentioning Twice
What a fantastic event! I know I've raved about it before, but it deserves another cheer. Revenue was up by $8.6k, and although costs increased by $3.5k (thanks to boosted prizes and more mouths to feed), that's still $5k straight to the bottom line. But it's not just about the dollars – we had loads of members playing in congresses for the first time. Here's hoping this "sell-out" trend continues!
East Lindfield Makeover
Oh my, doesn't she look swell! A huge thanks to everyone who made this happen – the place is looking better than ever. Please do your bit to keep her looking great, thanks.
NSBC Education Hub
We're now offering any club that sells our Online Lessons an affiliate commission. This means other clubs can offer their players our online content while earning a little something for their own coffers. Win-win!
We're hopeful this will give us the scale to cover the Education Hub software costs while also helping other clubs create more bridge enthusiasts (addicts, even!). We'd also love to roll out more technology and tools to help students practice. These things cost money, but our goal is to keep lesson prices steady – affordability matters.
Lindfield Rollers & NSBC Merger
You might not have heard much noise from us lately, but that doesn't mean nothing's happening behind the scenes. We're knee-deep in the nitty-gritty, figuring out exactly what this merger could look like for us as a club if we go ahead.
The good news? Things are moving forward – slowly but positively. It's absolutely critical that we dot every i and cross every t before we bring anything to you, our members. I'm hopeful we'll have more concrete news (the kind that actually tells you something!) in the next newsletter.
That's all from me, stay dry and warm, keep healthy and see you at the tables.

A conversation with John Havas
A relatively new NSBC member having joined 4 years ago at the young age of 79
John Havas was born in Budapest Hungary at the rather inconvenient time of 1943. It was inconvenient because Nazi Germany was in the planning stage of invading Hungary, which it then did in early 1944.
Prior to 1944, Hungary had been a part of the Axis with Germany but when Hungary attempted to negotiate peace plans with Great Britain and USA, Germany decided to invade and on invasion by Germany, many anti-Jewish laws were imposed.
My grandfather had established a printing business and was relatively wealthy. I had a nanny to initially look after me then during the war period I was looked after by a Christian family, I went to a Catholic school with my "new" family and while they looked after me, my parents were unable to come and see me.
After the war I returned to my parents, but Hungary was now under control of a pro-Soviet regime. The secret police came to our house and took everything they could, my parents ended up in jail. They were able to buy their way out but lost nearly everything. We had some help from a Communist person who had worked for my father. The pro-Soviet era lasted until 1956 when the Soviet Military stepped in to crush a nationwide uprising against the Hungarian government and its Soviet imposed policies.
Now was the time to leave Hungary and John and his family began to make the perilous journey out of Hungary to Austria. They had to use some of what money they had managed to get out of the country to buy help from people who could guide them across the border.
I was about fourteen at this stage and while in Austria I was supposed to go to school, but I skipped it and did some jobs to earn a little money.
My mother had a relative in Australia and so my parents filled out the documentation to become immigrants to Australia. When we landed here my father managed to sell some of our last possessions and with that money, buy a house. I went to school at Waverley College which was expensive but I was a good swimmer having been coached by the Hungarian Olympic coach and won a scholarship to the school. When I finished school I didn't want to go to University but I went on to study to become an accountant at Tafe.
[The article continues with John's career progression and eventual discovery of bridge, his enjoyment of the game, and thanks for his time and contribution to the club]

My tip for this month. If you don't need to know what a bid means don't ask, sometimes your opponents have got themselves into a wrong contract and by you asking you bring it to their attention. It's not being mean it also saves time.
On this hand I think North should open 1 Spade partner (South) will call 2 Diamonds.
North should now bid 2 Hearts (this is forcing as North has bid 2/1, partner can not pass).
Depending on your system. (If playing 2 over 1) you would bid 2NT, if not playing that with 16 HCP you will bid 3NT. North really doesn't want to play in No Trumps and bids 4 Hearts.
South has 3 card support. North is showing an unbalanced hand at least 5 Spades and 5 Hearts. I think South should now ask for Aces (4NT) North has 2 Keycards and the Queen of trumps. So the response is 5 Spades. Now South can call 6 Hearts. Some pairs played in 6NT and made but it shouldn't make but 6 Hearts is a great contract. Only one pair managed to find 6 Hearts. What a great hand.
On this hand East opens 1 Diamond. South passes and West calls 1 Heart. As North, with 8 good spades should be brave and bid 4 Spades confidently. East should pass. It is now up to West to take charge. Partner opened the bidding and you have 15 HCP. You absolutely should Double and this is for penalties. Your side should take 1 Spade trick, 2 Heart tricks, 1 Diamond trick and 2 Club tricks for a great score.
A lot of pairs were able to play in 4 Spades not Doubled.
Bridge maxims are not hard and fast rules to follow but are very good rules of thumb that have emerged after decades of general gameplay in the bridge community. Here are four maxims that I use regularly:
- "Eight ever, nine never." When missing the queen in a suit: finesse with 8 cards, play for the drop with 9. This works the majority of the time. However understand that a takeout double by the opponents may suggest the suit is not splitting 2-2 and it may be better to finesse.
- "When in doubt, lead a spade." Especially against no-trump contracts—spades are often unbid and disruptive. I use this one a lot when spades have not been bid and I don't have an obvious lead to choose.
- "You can't preempt a preempt." Once opponents have disrupted the auction, your options narrow. Partner will always think you are bidding a genuine hand and things get can messy quickly if you don't have one.
- "If you have a choice of reasonable bids and one of them is 3NT, then bid it." Known as Hamman's Law, this reflects the power and simplicity of no-trump contracts. If I think 5C or 5D is on then I will always try to find 3NT along the way. 3NT making 11 tricks is worth more than 5C or 5D making, however if 3NT is risky (not reasonable) then bidding game in the minors may be safer.
Remember, these are not hard and fast, just a good place to start when the circumstances arises.
Happy Bridging
Gary
The winner of last months Bridge puzzle was Alex Kemeny who will have his prize added to his account.
The solution was reasonably complex as the split of Hearts to East/West was 4/0.
The lead was the Jack of S's which is taken in South. South passes to North by playing a low D. North then leads a low H which is beaten by the 9 H's forcing South to play the King of H's. As West plays a low D it is clear the split is 4 Hearts to East. S then plays the three winning C's. Then passes to N through a D lead. N plays the 5 Clubs to be trumped by S. S then plays the two Winning Spades, while discarding the losing D in Norths hand. S then leads a Heart back to North which plays the 8 Hearts which is taken by East but enables North to take the last 2 tricks and the contract.
This months puzzle will be awarded to the first person with the correct answer but they must have less than 100 MP's i.e. the winner is limited to those who are Rookies and below.
The bidding for this months puzzle is to the right. Please tell me how this will be achieved in the play
Hint: There are no Diamond losers, no Club losers, but the Hearts break 4/1 to East. How do you play the cards to achieve the contract of 6H's
