Hymie Osie

Many of you will remember Hymie as a fierce competitor and feisty character. Beneath that veneer, was a kind-hearted, generous, supremely honest, virtuous and decent family man. Bridge was an integral part of Hymie’s life, playing right up until the last few weeks.

Hymie had been a stalwart at North Shore Bridge Club for many years. If you have played at any of the day or night online sessions recently at NSBC, you are very likely to have met Hymie - even though quite often he would be invisible and/or inaudible. His video and microphone were usually turned off as he was profoundly deaf!

Hymie was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1931 - his parents were  immigrants from Lithuania. After leaving school, Hymie became a diamond cutter, and eventually a partner in a retail diamond business. He was a talented sportsman, playing soccer and cricket until his late 30s. He even took up running after giving up smoking, and completed the Kentucky Derby half marathon when aged nearly 80!

Bridge became a central part of Hymie's life - he played regularly at NSBC and at an International level, including the Maccabi Games.
