FROM THE PRESIDENT

What an exciting time it is to be part of our Club.

The Club continues to go from strength to strength, with some of our Rookie face-to-face sessions achieving record attendances week after week. As someone who spends a fair bit of time around East Lindfield, I can honestly say the energy around the Club is buzzing. There are new players learning the game, friendships forming, and plenty of excitement around what is happening at the Club.

One thing I would love to see more of is members staying around after their game. Some of the best parts of club life happen once the cards have been put away. Whether it's sharing a drink, discussing a hand, celebrating a good result, or simply getting to know fellow members, these social connections are what turns a bridge club into a community. So next time you play, consider staying for just one drink or a quick chat. You might be surprised how much you enjoy it.

One piece of exciting news I am particularly pleased to share is that we will be honouring our Club Treasure, John McIlrath, with a special annual Gold Point Congress — the inaugural John McIlrath Trophy.

Many people have contributed to the success of our Club and the securing of our forever home. However, John's foresight many years ago to build and protect the Club's reserves placed us in a strong position when opportunities eventually arose. His long-term thinking and stewardship helped ensure that we were ready when it mattered most.

It therefore feels entirely fitting that we recognise his contribution in this way. Better still, both John and Patricia will be joining us on the day, giving members the opportunity to thank them personally and celebrate their contribution to the Club.

The Congress is already around half full, so if you are considering playing, don't leave it too long. Gold Point events are rare, the Swiss format is enjoyable for players of all standards, and it promises to be a terrific day.

I would also like to warmly welcome Teaminvest as our newest sponsor. Teaminvest is an investment community that helps everyday investors become more confident and informed decision- makers. Through education, research, analysis tools and a network of like-minded investors, members gain support and resources so they never have to navigate the ups and downs of investing alone.

We are grateful for Teaminvest's support and encourage members to visit our Sponsors page to learn more about Teaminvest and the other businesses that support our Club. Please support the businesses that support us whenever you can. Click here to view Teaminvests' web page

Meanwhile, Mike, Josh and I have been busy preparing for what is shaping up to be a fantastic Festival of Bridge in June. This is our biggest event of the year and we have something for everyone.

Entries are now open and I have a favour to ask. If you are planning to play, please get your entries in early. Events that look popular become even more popular. When members see fields filling and sessions approaching capacity, it creates excitement and encourages others to join in. The sooner the entries come in, the easier it is for us to build momentum and make the Festival a great success.

So have a look through the Festival program, grab a partner or some teammates, and get your entries in. The sooner the fields fill, the sooner everyone else decides they don't want to miss out either.

Thank you, as always, for being part of this wonderful community. Whether you are a Rookie attending your first session, an experienced player chasing Gold Points, a volunteer, a sponsor, or simply someone who loves the game, you are helping make this Club the special place that it is.

See you at the tables. Shaz

OUR MEMBERS - OUR CLUB

The Club recently announced a new event named in honour of John McIlrath, a long-serving member, manager and director. Although many people know of John’s contribution, I felt it was important to speak with the man behind the event, so I met with him in early May.

John indicated he began his life in Bridge about 1988. Prior to bridge his commercial background had been in accounting and financial control initially with Price Waterhouse and then moving to International Flavours and Fragrances, a Company which manufactured flavours for food/beverage industry and fragrances for soap/cosmetics. He stayed with IFC for 19 years until a planned international move with the company fell through and he decided to leave.

John first learned bridge in his late teens and played socially when Bridge was popular with young families and couples would bring babies in bassinets for dinner and kitchen bridge games.

He joined Lindfield Bridge Club in 1983 after seeing an advertisement in a local newspaper and attended a beginner's course, with first partner Angie Bolton (then Angie Maczewski) under instructor Trish Reed - in those days the club was located upstairs in Lindfield Arcade (Linfield Avenue)

John started working with Greg Quitmer in 1988 at Gordon Bridge Centre and when Greg Quittner was taking long service leave from the education department and he helped out while Greg was away.

Paul Marsden then approached me to manage the Grand Slam Bridge Centre at Mosman and I carried on in that role for four years until the lease expired - there was difficulty finding suitable premises and that led to club folding.

I then started at Cammeray Bridge Club at the Anzac Memorial Club with committee structure and served as chief director. I left that club due to personality conflicts, cutting up my membership card in protest.

I founded two entrepreneurial clubs in 2000, Cove Bridge at the Willis and at Club Willoughby

In 2006, John Mottram and Frank Goodye approached me to amalgamate three clubs, and this became the North Shore Bridge Club – I insisted the Lindfield name be excluded due to its reputation for poor treatment of new players. I managed the club for five years under contract from 2007. We also acquired Greg Quitmer's Gordon Bridge Centre, creating NSBC at East Lindfield. We had plans even at that stage to extend over Bowling Green number three, but that was blocked when Roseville Bowlers moved to Lindfield Bowling Club

After stepping down as manager, multiple managers followed, and each time John returned to the role to help. John continued in committee leadership through various presidents including David Frieda, Mark Guthrie, and current president Sharon Thompson. He says he has seen changes in the club – an evolution from casual arrangements to professional operations requiring formal staff management, superannuation, and compliance.

John is 82 years old but has not retired from bridge activities, he currently works as a bridge director - his vocation since 1988. His bridge work spectrum has not been limited to managing/owning Bridge Clubs - he is and has been the National Director for over 25 years - my attempts at retirement have been unsuccessful.

He is Chair of Directing committee of Bridge New South Wales and in the past has been non-playing captain for three Australian teams, non-playing captain for approximately eight New South Wales interstate championship teams.

John maintains his enthusiasm for Bridge and has upcoming directing assignments in the Spring Nationals, Darwin Territory Gold event at the end of August, and into the future at the Barrier Reef Congress in Cairns (April/May next year).

Having been in Bridge managing and directing so long he has seen bridge clubs having evolved from community social entities to commercially minded professional bodies. He is an advocate for a "mind games club" concept for bridge clubs where square tables can be utilised for various games e.g. chess etc.)

He is a strong supporter of online bridge because of its accessibility to a broad spectrum of people across Australia and believes state championships should be run online for this opportunity for so many to play.

It was an interesting conversation and it was obvious why John has had a major bridge event named in his honour – thanks John

If you never thought Bridge could be lots of fun then try the photo at right. This is the latest class from Garry Viner on their second last lesson day. So excited at playing Bridge they thought they should take a photo to show much they enjoyed it.

If you have friends, relatives or neighbours that could be interested in Bridge then let them know how much people enjoy the game. The next course starts on Saturday mornings 6th June at 0900 - 1100.

Planning the Play in a NT Contract

Learn how to best plan and play a No Trumps contract. Count your winners.

Wednesday 1st July 0930 - 1130 The Willis

DEAR DIRECTOR - GARRY VINER

Deciding whether or not to choose NT or a suit contract make a big difference in duplicate bridge. One scenario might be after partner opens a strong NT and you have a major but have a very balanced hand such as 4-3-3-3, with no ruffing potential. In this case it’s generally better to stay in NT even if you did have a fit in your major.

Here is another such case - board 4 from EL Thu 1.00pm Open on May 28.

Partner opened 2C with that lovely North hand. After a 2D waiting bid, he bid his spades to show at least a 5-card suit. As underwhelming as my hand was, I was not able to pass as the 2C opening meant we had to bid to game, and so I bid 3H to show my own 5-card suit. That was enough for partner to bid 3NT, reasoning that his good spades were likely to be just as good in NT as they would be in a spade contract.

The lead from E was a low club which declarer was not unhappy to see. Counting his tricks he saw 6 off the top - 3 spades, a diamond and 2 clubs.

Three more would come if the spades broke 3-3. In the more likely case that the spades split 4-2 he would have to find another trick somewhere, and this was likely to come in hearts or diamonds.

Starting off with the high spades, he was please to see that they were going to split kindly, so with the contract assured he turned his mind to overtricks but leading a low diamond towards the Q. His hope was that the K was with E which would promote the Q as a winner, and possibly the 5D as a further winner if the diamonds also split 3-3. Sure enough E rose with the K and played another club. It remained a simple case of winning this with the A, cashing the remaining spades, and then playing AD, QD and 5D for 11 tricks in all - 6 spades, 3 diamonds and 2 clubs. The defense was able to take the final trick with a heart - switching earlier after winning KD would have brought them one more trick. Either way, the score in NT would have been better than the 620 we would have earned in 4 spades.

Obviously the decision to play in NT here was not without it’s risks. I imagine that if partner’s singleton H had been a small card rather than the K, he would have opted to play it in spades, but figured that the K would comprise some form of stopper together with whatever I happened to have in the suit for my bid, and so it transpired.

That was a case where fortune favoured the brave, and later in the same session we were on the receiving side of the same idiom, not once, not twice, but three times in a row from the same pair. These were boards 10-12 from EL Thu 1.00pm Open on May 28, for those that want to check.

On the first hand, after opening 1C and his partner responding 1S, E jumped to 4S despite only having 3-card support, saying to his partner “I’m confident that you have 5 of them”. In fact they played it in a 4-3 fit, but the contract was unbeatable.

Next time around after the bidding went 1C - 1H - 1S, he rebid 4H with the 5-card suit AKQJT. Who needs support from partner with a suit this good?

The piece de resistance was here on board 12 where his partner had opening 2H to show hearts and another suit.

After a lot of thought, he boldly bid 6H - no thought for asking for aces. When dummy went down and partner led the KC, I thought we were going to take the first two tricks, but no. Declarer had a singleton and with 5H, 5D and 2S, 12 tricks were simple.

It’s not that these three contracts were ridiculously difficult to find, just the bravado with which they were bid that left my partner and I feeling shellshocked. So well done, that man.

Out of interest, if my partner and I had played with the EW cards, this is how we would have bid it. We play simple weak twos, and would figure the W hand a bit too strong for a 2-level opening, so would open 1H. E would respond a Jacoby 2NT, promising a 4-card fit and opening hand. After such a bid, opener can show a singleton or void if they have one by bidding a suit at the three level, or show 5/5 by bidding a suit at the four level, so with this hand the follow-up bid would be 4D. E would be happy to find partner had values in a suit that he held AQ in, and would proceed to slam through Blackwood, with just a little concern about possibly losing the first two tricks in clubs.

As it happens, the auction is easier with a 3C rebid showing the shortage in clubs as opposed to the 4D rebid showing length in diamonds. In this case, we’d have the bidding space to cue-bid controls. The full auction would be 1H - 2NT - 3C (shortage) - 3D (control in D) - 3H (waiting) - 3S (control in spades) - 4D (control from other hand in D) - 4NT (Blackwood) - 5C (1 or 4 keycards) - 6H. No room for any doubt, we’d both have a very good idea of what each other had, and we’d bid the slam with confidence. Incidentally, for those pairs that do use cue bids at this level to show controls, I’d strongly recommend doing so to show 1st or 2nd round controls, rather than just showing first round controls.
